Different Types of Pipes

Now that winter is here we have to be careful to not leave standing water in our pipes in case the frozen water causes the pipes to burst, but we’ll talk about that later.  Lets discuss the different types of pipes that may be used in your home.

  • Cast iron: These types of pipes are pretty rare in homes built after the 1960s.  Cast iron is a very durable material, but can rust over time.  If you do come across a rusted piece, call one of your neighborhood All Pro Plumbers and we’ll replace it for you.

  • Plastic: There are two types of plastic pipings.  Either ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) or PVC (polyvinyl-chloride). Most homes since the mid-1970s, switched over to plastic pipes and fittings because they are more cost efficient and easier to use.

  • PEX: PEX piping (cross-linked polyethylene) is the newest type of piping.  PEX is faster  and easier to install than copper because there’s no soldering needed, and it is very durable.  Especially in areas with acidic water.
  • Steel: Galvanized steel pipe is common in older homes. Though galvanized pipes are strong they only last about 50 years.  If you find yourself in the predicament of needing to repair your still pipes, consider replacing them instead.

  • Copper: Copper pipe is resistant to corrosion, and it is commonly used in water supply lines. However, it does cost more than plastic, but may be more durable.

There you have it!  Different types of plumbing pipes.  For more information, or questions on any or all of your plumbing needs, don’t hesitate to give All Pro Plumbing a call at (503) 579-5555.  We would love to hear from you.  Now be sure to bundle up, stay warm, and be careful on the potentially icy roads.
