Diagnose a Clogged Garbage Disposal

It is important to determine whether the kitchen sink drain is clogged or if the garbage disposal is clogged. To figure out if your garbage disposal has a clog, turn on the water and the disposal. If you hear a buzzing sound with no indication the blades are rotating, and the water is not draining, it is most likely a clog in the garbage disposal unit.

It is very important a clog is fixed immediately, or it will begin to smell as the jammed food items start to rot. If you have a clogged garbage disposal, contact your local Portland OR plumbers at All Pro Plumbing.

DIY Unclogging a Garbage Disposal

You can try a few things to remedy the situation. However, if you attempt the following and the clog still exists, it is time to contact a professional plumbing service.

  1. Reset Your Garbage Disposal – Look for a red colored reset button on the bottom of the appliance. Make sure the disposal is turned in the “off” position and then push the red button “in” the allotted amount. Turn the water tap “on” in the sink and then turn on the disposal. It should start working. If the red reset button does not stay in, you will need to have the unit serviced.
  2. Baking Soda Method – You can use a solution of vinegar and baking soda to try and dissolve grime that is causing the clog. Pour hot water down the drain followed by about a half-cup of baking soda. Let this sit for a few minutes. Next, add white vinegar and let the solution sit for a few minutes before rinsing with more hot water.
  3. Never Use Chemicals – Unclogging a kitchen sink is very different from unclogging other drains in your home. Avoid using harsh, chemical drain cleaners in a garbage disposal, as the chemicals are highly corrosive and can damage any rubber or plastic parts.

What Should Not Go Down Your Garbage Disposal

Avoid sending the following items down your garbage disposal to avoid clogs:

  • Plastic or metal utensils
  • Grease
  • Pasta and rice
  • Potato peelings
  • Fibrous vegetables like corn husks and celery
  • Pits of fruits like cherries, peaches, and avocados
  • Coffee grounds

If you are in the Portland OR metro area and are experiencing any of the issues associated with a clogged garbage disposal, call All Pro Plumbing today! We will get your system running at an affordable price.
