What is a drain trap?

A drain trap or a plumbing trap is made to keep the sewer gas smells from being released from the drains.  Therefore, there’s a trap in every drain connection because there’s a potential for sewer gas outlet.  A drain trap is constantly holding some water to stop the gas from being released.

If there’s a strange odor coming from the drains, the first thing to do is to check to see if the trap is dry.  If it is, then this can usually be remedied by running the water and filling the trap back up.  Simple as that.  If the odor continues then you may want to neutralize the smell by using baking soda and vinegar or with some oxygen bleach.  Remember to come back and check out All Pro’s plumbing blogs for future plumbing tips and suggestions, and as always for any and all of your plumbing needs give All Pro a call at (503) 579-5555.
