Items to Avoid Putting Down the Kitchen Sink

Hopefully everyone had a wonderful and safe Halloween!  Now onwards…in preparation for the season of Thanksgiving, with holiday travels, and family get-togethers.  Which also means the season for clogged sinks and toilets. So we will go through a list of kitchen sink “no-nos.”

So what should you definitely avoid putting down kitchen sinks/garbage disposals?

Items that are not food

Avoid disposing rubber bands, twist ties, cigarette butts, pull tabs, fabric, sponges, plant clippings, etc.  These items just can’t easily break down to be washed down the drain.

Big Chunks of Fibrous Foods

Fibrous foods such as celery, artichokes, asparagus, lettuce, corn husks, carrots, onion skins and potato peels can wrap around the blades, hindering the motor to work properly.

Fats, Oils, and Grease

Pouring grease into a garbage disposal can result in clogged drains when the grease solidifies.

Egg Shells

Contrary to popular beliefs, egg shells do not sharpen the blades of garbage disposals.  Instead it can be quite harmful to the unit.  The shells’ stringy membrane layers can wrap around the shredder ring, and the grounded up shells with the sand-like consistency can clog the pipes.

Hopefully these tips will keep your kitchen sink and garbage disposal in ship-shape condition in time for your next big get-together.  For any plumbing needs or concerns be sure to call your friendly neighborhood All Pro Plumber at (503)579-5555, we’re always here to help.
