Main Shut Off Valve
The Main Shut Off Valve is very important in stopping most plumbing catastrophes, such as a burst pipe. Make sure that every persons in the household knows where this valve is located in your home, even children.
How to locate the Main Shut Off Valve
The Main Shut Off Valve will be near the perimeter of your home, whether it is located inside or outside of the home.
When the Main Shut Off Valve is located outside of the home it is usually under a round, square, or rectangular steel or iron lid. If this is the case, there will usually be the water meter as well as the company’s shut off valve next to the main shut off. The Main Shut Off Valve should be the one closet to your home.
When the Main Shut Off Valve is located inside the house, it will usually be in the basement, or garage. If not, there should be some type of access panel that hides the valve. If you have your inspection report handy, the report should also locate the whereabouts of the Main Shut Off Valve.
Once the Main Shut Off Valve is located, it would either be a gate valve (circular wheel), or a ball valve type (which looks like a handle) and to turn it off simply turn the valves clockwise until it stops.
