How to Reset A Garbage Disposal
If your disposal is making a humming noise, or the blades are making no noise at all, this means that the automatic shut-off to your garbage disposal has been activated, and you may need to follow these instructions to Reset a Garbage Disposal.
Reset A Garbage Disposal
Step 1 – Be safe
To Reset a Garbage Disposal, safety is always our first priority. Make sure the power is turned off. Shut off the power to the entire kitchen, and empty out the sink.
Step 2 – Check the inside of the garbage disposal
Using your flashlight look carefully for anything that might be caught inside. Move the light around to see as much of the inside of the garbage disposal as possible.
Step 3 – Remove any obstructions
If there is a lodged object, use a long screwdriver to pull the item up from the inside of the garbage disposal. For your own safety, never put your hands inside the garbage disposal, even when the power to the appliance has been shut off.
Step 4 – Reset A Garbage Disposal
Crouch down and shine the light on the underside of the garbage disposal. Find the red reset button and press it. Listen carefully to hear if the disposal makes a click noise, if the garbage disposal makes the noise then you have just Reset A Garbage Disposal.
Step 5 – Run Cold Water
Turn on the cold water. Allow the water to run for a minute, then turn the water off.
Step 6 – Check the Garbage Disposal
Turn the power to the kitchen back on. Turn the disposal back on and it should work. If a humming sound continues from the garbage disposal instead, then repeat steps 1-6 and recheck after turning the power back on.
