Portland Water Color

Why is my Portland Water Color not clear?  What does this rainbow of colors mean?

Portland Water Color

Red, orange, yellow, & brown

If your Portland Water Color resembles that of autumn leaves, then more than likely the problem is due to oxidizing rust.  The varying colors depends upon the level of rust oxidation and the concentration.  Usually the two main sources comes from the water main or the water pipes in your building.

Green

If your Portland Water Color comes out green, that would commonly indicate copper corrosion.

Copper corrosion can also be caused by your electrical system being grounded to your water pipes, especially if you have a mixture of pipe materials.  The presence of copper can be confirmed through analysis.

Blue

If your Portland Water Color comes are bluish-green than the copper corrosion is really bad.  Blue water can also be causedby dezincification of poor-quality bronze alloys found in valves, water pumps, and water pump parts. This problem can occur in high-rise buildings and large industrial properties where the water is pumped to storage tanks. The water may also be tested for zinc.

Cloudy White or Milky White

If your Portland Water Color is Milky or cloudy white that is almost always caused by air in the water. To see if the white color in the water is due to air, fill a clear glass with water and set it on the counter. Observe the glass of water for about 3 minutes. If the white color is due to air, the water will begin to clear at the bottom of the glass first and then gradually will clear all the way to the top. If your water is cloudy or milky white in appearance and it does not clear in a glass after 5 minutes, contact the water department in your town.
